How Many Calories Are in Chili Crisp?

A spinach and beet salad topped with a scattering of Super Magic Taste Yummy Crisp, the jar on a pink cloth behind it.

A teaspoon of Super Magic Taste Chili Crisp has 29 calories. A tablespoon is three teaspoons, so about 87. Almost all of it comes from fat, because the crunchy bits sit in oil and oil is where the calories are.

The crunch, sadly, is not calorie free.

The numbers, per teaspoon

Where the calories come from

Fat has 9 calories a gram. A teaspoon has 3.1 grams of fat, which is about 28 of the 29 calories. The rest is a crumb of carbohydrate and protein.

The fat comes from the sunflower oil, plus a little from the almonds and sesame seeds. That is just what chili crisp is: crispy things in oil.

Sugar and sodium

There is 0.1 g of sugar in a teaspoon. That is a pinch, used for balance, not sweetness.

Sodium is 32 mg a teaspoon, 1% of your daily value. We keep the salt light on purpose, so you can season your food the way you normally would and add chili crisp on top without it going too salty.

A teaspoon is smaller than you think

Here is the catch. Nobody eats chili crisp by the level teaspoon. A big, happy spoonful over a bowl of noodles can easily be a tablespoon or two, which is 87 to 174 calories.

If you are counting, measure it once. After that you will know what your usual spoonful looks like.

Is chili crisp healthy?

It is a condiment, so the answer depends on your plate more than the jar. What we can tell you is what is in ours: nine ingredients and no MSG. It is vegan and gluten free.

Not every jar is built the same way. Some are mostly oil, some are heavily salted, and some contain dried shrimp. Compare labels per teaspoon, and read the first three ingredients. How to Choose a Chili Crisp walks through what to look for.

Try it

Our Chili Crisp is made with sunflower oil, gochugaru chili, almonds, sesame seeds, onion, garlic, tamari, sugar and salt. Prefer no heat? Yummy Crisp swaps the chili for mushrooms, with the same 29 calories a teaspoon.
